Two Hundred Ninety One

It seems I'm doin' another writer double feature recommendation. Or it's a director double feature? Actually, it's both...

The play The Children's Hour was first staged in 1934. It was Lillian Hellman's first play she had written and was a Broadway hit. It was seriously considered for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, but was so controversial it did not win. The next year the New York Drama Critics' Circle started their own drama award. The film adaptation was released in 1961 and was directed by the great William Wyler. It also stars three legends; James Garner, Shirley MacClain and Audrey Hepburn. Not much better than that. Shirley and Audrey are trying to run their own all girls school. It was nominated for five Oscars and three Golden Globes, but failed to win one...


The Little Foxes is another collaboration between Lillian Hellman (play written in 1939) and William Wyler (movie released in 1941). Most of the cast of the play made their film debuts but Bette Davis was cast in the lead. A little tale about controlling the family cotton business with the backdrop of the sunny south USA.

"Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes."

It was nominated for eight Oscars, but didn't win any...
