So, let's watch two stories about life in the USSR. A double feature weekend. Yes, I know, the country doesn't exist anymore. Both films released recently and are very loosely based on real events...

The newer one was released in 2015 and is known as Child 44. The novel it was adapted from, of the same name, was released in 2008. Again, it's loosely based on a serial killer from the '80s. In a perfect society, 'that doesn't happen'. It's a suspense thriller that also delves into life under a soviet socialist rule. Here's another hint, she fears him. It stars Tom Hardy (1) and Noomi Rapace (1)...

The slightly older film from 2013 is Phantom. It's not a sci-fi nor a fantasy movie. It's a cold war submarine thriller. Again, loosely based on real world events surrounding the lose of a Soviet submarine in 1968. Who's in control? Who's in charge? Who do you trust? He was chosen for a reason. In this one Ed Harris (2) is the Captain and David Duchovny has a mission...

And those are the selections for this week...

(1) The Drop, week 4

(2) Pain & Gain, week 47
