220 mph is Easy on the Mulsanne Straight

Updated: May 20, 2022

More sports! More racing films anyway. Much like the Formula 1 blog from week 211, we have a two movie event from the most dangerous era in the sport. The first movie is a fictional tale told over a weekend or so, about a little race, on a little track, near a little town in France. Le Mans (1971) stars Steve McQueen. A 24 hour race, non stop, on a 8.5 mile track. In 1966 their lap times were under 4 minutes averaging a speed of 140 mph.

The next film is the nonfictional story about a battle between manufacturers. It also dwells into the humanity and dangers of this era in racing. Ford v. Ferrari (2019) stars Christian Bale and Matt Damon.
